Risperidrone Hit the High Seas in the Upcoming New Single
Updated: Aug 21, 2021
'Lost to the Sea' is about to hit the deck on August 27th. Available through Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music and Bandcamp.
A jaunty motif is juxtaposed by an unfaltering sense of doom with themes of hope and loss repeated throughout. So what's the inspiration behind the new single? And will the crew of the good ship Risperidrone be 'Lost to the Sea' forever? Find out below......
Breakdown
It's impossible to escape the impact that the last two years (yes two! even writing that seems absurd) has had on each of us; and within each person a different manifestation of our troubles. Some run from them in search of something better. Some will block them out, refusing to answer. And others they become actors; hiding behind a mask, a smile or obtuse metaphors of pirates on the high seas torn apart by mutiny. You may of already guessed it... I fall into the latter.
But obtuse metaphors of pirates on the high seas don't just come from anywhere - lyrics are simply the canvas awaiting the brush of an artist. In this case it was less a brush more a buzz sawing brittle bass line cutting into the mids. This is where the juxtaposition that is 'Lost to the Sea' begins.
The opening bass line contrasts major intervals with heavy distortion creating an uneasy alliance between light and dark. Akin to a warm summer night over shadowed by thick, menacing and oppressive storm clouds. These clouds break in the most beautiful fashion - the haunting ring of a drop tuned power chord stirring your bones and drawing you into the composition.
It is here we meet our subject, a cursed crew of pirates torn apart by mutiny. These soldiers of fortune set out with hope in their heart only to become desolate whilst cast into the doldrums. The rift between the crew is reflected in the vocal arrangements; dominant distorted vocals show a captains orders answered by the mellow harmony of the crews discontent.
And suddenly the rift stops. The chatter of being lost to the sea is no more. Galloping guitars reflect the winds rolling in from the west - the crew are silent in their hard work making haste with the trade winds.
But discontent is never far away. Subtle acts and peaceful crimes disturb the status quo and tales begin to circulate of darkest fears contained within the endless depths; pursuing them until they're run aground.
Alas, mutiny rears its ugly head again and the crew is broken down. It is here that the song climaxes into intense chaos; slides and vibratos pierce through a backdrop of doom laden chords. This chaos continues, and, without order, the good ship Risperidrone is once and for all 'Lost to the Sea'.
Could this whole composition be an elaborate simile for the struggle through our current reality? Maybe. But art is not for the artist but for the audience. Each pair of eyes or ears are different. The meaning is changed by the individual and therefore no two people can experience art in the same way. This isn't 'Enduring Love' in GCSE English and there isn't a syllabus defined meaning of every measley metaphor. Play it through your phone sat at the back off the bus, blast it out on the M4 queueing for the Bryn Glas tunnel or sit at home listening in quiet contemplation. Experience it for yourself; tell us what it means.
